influence

There are so many people who have influenced me in my past that it's hard to choose who had a bigger influence on me. I think it would probably be my parents. Both my parents went to college for art and are both graphic designers. When I was very young I was just constantly surrounded by art. My parents weren't the kind of parents who would mother you, they would let me experience life on my own and let me be who I want to be. I've had many people in and out of my life who have influenced me, some teachers, some hockey coaches, and some friends but none have been a constant influence.

Now that I am growing older and moved away from home for school I have begun to find new influences. A few of my teachers really push me and influence me, but when it comes down to it no one has really influenced me as much as my parents. I would be a totally different person if I had different parents.

manifesto

- Don’t over think.
Sometimes over thinking is a bad thing. Think simple every now and then.

- Do something you love.
Try and do something you love when designing. If you don’t love what your doing then your going to have a bad time and will show in your design.

- Use everything.
Try and use as much inspiration as possible. Take millions of ideas and apply them to your design. Even if you use 20 ideas that were once someone else’s it will be totally different from any of those 20 ideas.

- Consume inspiration.
Read, write, go for a walk, listen to music, collect quotes, draw, paint. Do anything that will spark some creativity. Sometimes starting a design is the hardest part.

- Be curious
Be as curious as possible. Try something you’ve never done before if you don’t like it then never do it again, at least you know. Ask a lot of questions because there’s no such thing as a wrong question.

- Process.
Always do process work. Just because it’s your first idea doesn’t mean it will be your best. Do as much as you can then choose your best idea.

- Know how to be wrong.
You wont know how to be right if you don’t know what wrong is.

- Manage your time.
Find a good way to manage your time and kill procrastination. Leaving something to the least minute can be stressful and could end up looking bad.

- Think positive
Being negative never got anyone anywhere.

- Discover past the first right answer.
Going with the first answer or solution can kill future ones.

My Thought Process

After hearing about this project I thought it sounded pretty fun. It's for a client and we have the chance in winning some money. Sweet. But I don't really know anything about jazz music. So the first thing I did was hop onto google images and just try and get a quick sense of some sort of jazz images. After a few minutes of stumbling around random jazz website I noticed everything is very colourful and pointy. The next thing I did was just talk to some of my freinds here in residence who are in the jazz program and just see what they think about it. All my friends truly love the program and have an outstanding relationship with the music they play. They also say it can be very relaxing to play jazz, but it can also be very technical.

After getting some information I had some ideas popping in my head already. I went to the computer with a few things to focus on in my design. Those things were "pointy" and "technical". I used a bunch of lines in my design, I thought they could resemble some sort of music note sheet but in a very ebstract way.

With the cd project I found that I was extremely focused and wasn't distracted by anything other then my rumbling tummy. I grabbed some food then went right back into it. I want to know whats wrong my cd with it so I can fix it up right away.

How do I create?

Hmmm? How do I create. I've never really thought about it until the discussion was brought up in class. But I definitely create out of inspiration, I have no idea when I will be inspired but when I do it's a really good feeling. The other day I saw a wonderful piece of art and it just kick started my creativity and created some album art for my friends band.

I wish there was a way where I could be in constant creativity mode, but it's really hard sometimes. I like some of the tips mentioned in class such as "look at the everyday world for inspiration". I went out one sunny afternoon and just walked down the street to Tim Hortons and kept that in mind, and I looked at everything in a totally different way. Also "read a book" I get a lot of my creativity and inspiration from books. Books are very personal, and if you can create something with the inspiration of a book it will be very personal and original.

I am definetly a creative person and mostly create out of inspiration, memories, and experiences.

Design?

Design is.........

I feel that design could pretty much be anything. Design is properly laid out words on a page. Design is a t- shirt that fits wonderfully. Design is a small cell phone that weighs zero pounds. A
nything that is created with a purpose can be considered design. Every project we have designed so far has had a reason or purpose, if not given to by the instructor then by ourselves.

Even if something is considered design, who's to say that it's good design? When I look back at my projects from first semester I can easily say a lot of it is bad design. Only because I didn't know what design really was, I had no idea design was everywher
e and created with a purpose.

Here's something I found
that is designed wonderfully.

All it is, is a plastic drink holder. It is designed to save space in your fridge and be convenient to carry 4 can in 1 hand. It is so simple.

Here's something else that I think is nice design.

These things are paper water bottles. CRAZY COOL! The people who invented these understood the changing of times and the scare of global warming, and designed a product that will satisfy all the eco friendly people.

I'll just repeat myself in conclusion to what design is. Design is anything created with a purpose.
